What Exactly is Teen Life Coaching?
Just as personal trainers are often used to help people get their bodies into better shape, life coaching is something many people use to get their lives into better shape. The personal trainer works alongside the trainee to develop goals and to provide encouragement and motivation along the way to achieving these goals. As a teen life coach, I work in much this same way.
My first goal is to develop a deep understanding of my client, including his or her strengths, passions, limitations, personality style, interests, current challenges, short term goals, and long term aspirations. With this knowledge, I work on an individual basis with each client to determine the focus of coaching sessions, and to customize a coaching plan. Possible areas of focus may include career exploration, academic performance, college search and planning, social issues (lack of social network, assertiveness training etc.), self image, time management and stress management.
As a teen life coach I may play many roles including guide, mentor, cheerleader, and motivator. However, the client is ultimately responsible for choosing goals, and is responsible for doing the work between sessions to achieve these goals. In this way, I work to empower teens to create lasting changes that will lead to lives of deep joy, personal responsibility, and happiness.
Who Can Benefit From Teen Life Coaching?
Just as anyone can benefit from having a personal trainer to achieve their fitness goals, I believe any teenager can benefit from having a life coach to meet their personal goals. However, counseling is also an effective means of personal growth and may be more appropriate than coaching in some cases.
What is the Difference Between Coaching and Counseling?
The differences between counseling and coaching are often blurred and may depend on who is providing services.
In general, I recommend coaching for teens who are not experiencing serious emotional or relational difficulties, and who wish to work towards concrete, specific, future oriented goals. Common issues that indicate coaching include career exploration, academic performance, college search and planning, social issues, time management, and stress management. Coaching can also be very powerful for helping teenagers who are in the midst of typical life transitions, such as starting or finishing middle school or high school, preparing for graduation and preparing for college.
On the other hand, I recommend counseling for teenagers who are experiencing more serious emotional or relationship difficulties that may be interfering with current functioning. Common counseling issues I work with include grief/loss, anxiety, feelings of sadness, lack of motivation, bullying, substance abuse, anger, and frequent conflicts with family and/or friends.
